The SDC is deeply concerned about the arrest of Senator Lucas. Under the Trump administration, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia has repeatedly operated in a partisan, politically charged manner.
These charges come just under two weeks out from a major federal election where Republicans are projected to lose several seats in Virginia. The timing is suspicious, and suggests a desire to use the DOJ to influence elections.
We have already witnessed serious misconduct in prosecutions of Trump critics here in Virginia, including the cases of James Comey and Letitia James. Both indictments were dismissed due to an unlawfully appointed prosecutor, and subsequent grand juries refused to indict James.
These events have undermined public trust in the DOJ, particularly here in Hampton Roads, and raise serious questions about its independence and impartiality.
No elected official is above the law, but also no one should be subjected to politically motivated prosecution. Given Senator Lucas's history as one of the state's most outspoken Trump critics, as well as her championing of the 10-1 map, these charges deserve extreme scrutiny.
We call for a fair, transparent, and impartial process that ensures the Trump administration does not engage in political interference.
