Opose the Anti-Voting SAVE act
The SAVE act passed in the House of Representatives on February 11th. It now goes to the Senate. The SAVE act would impose new ID requirements for voting. Republicans say these requirements are necessary to prevent voter fraud. But not matter what they say, the SAVE Act is designed to block eligible people from voting, not to protect elections.
The bill would require a passport or birth certificate to prove citizenship in order to register, and a current approved form of government photo ID to cast a ballot. Voting may be denied for reasons such as names on the various forms of ID not matching. This could present an obvious problem for people who's names have changed such as many married women.
Additionally, many Americans don't have ready access to their birth certificates and many don't have passports. These new rules will not affact all Americans equally. According to the Brennen Center:
The SAVE Act would disenfranchise Americans of all ages and races, but younger voters and voters of color would suffer disproportionately. Likewise, millions of women whose married names aren't on their birth certificates or passports would face extra steps just to make their voices heard.
Jen Kiggans, as expected, voted for this bill.
The bill now goes to the United States Senate. Fortunately, Our Democratic Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine have both expressed their opposition to this dishonest attempt to disenfranchise voters under the guise of protecting elections.
